If you are intending to travel abroad, you have a lot of preparing to do. Do you know about the particular health risks in the area you are traveling? Do you know how to prevent food-borne illness and what illnesses can be prevented with immunizations and medications?
Before you pack your bags, make an appointment with the Travel Clinic at MeritCare — the one-stop resource to prepare for a trip overseas.
The Travel Clinic provides immunizations plus health information for your particular travel destination all in one appointment. The Travel Clinic works with groups, business travelers, missionaries, vacationers and many others. Services include:
- Immunization review and administration, including the yellow-fever vaccine
- Comprehensive education tailored to the traveler's itinerary, including how to prevent traveler's diarrhea, jet lag, malaria and other serious health problems
- Up-to-date, country-specific information drawn from such sources as the Centers for Disease Control, the State Department and the World Health Organization
Planning Ahead
Preparation is important when traveling overseas, especially if you are visiting a developing country, because you may be exposed to infections, illnesses and other problems that you normally wouldn't face in the U.S. Plus, you may not have the same access to healthcare. By being prepared, you may be able to avoid preventable illness.
If you are planning a trip to a developing country, contact the Travel Clinic at least one month in advance to allow adequate time for any series of vaccinations that may be required. Travelers with existing medical conditions may want to make contact sooner to ensure any adjustments in medications are made prior to travel.
