Fertility Facts
Difficulty becoming pregnant is typically a surprise to most couples. Many have no medical history that would indicate a problem. Some may have tried to prevent pregnancy for years and may assume that when contraception is stopped, conception will be easy.
- Trouble conceiving or sustaining a pregnancy affects about 10 percent of all couples
- The likelihood for all couples of becoming pregnant and carrying a baby to birth is about 20 percent per month.
- Over 500 couples from North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana are currently being treated at MeritCare.
- MeritCare's Reproductive Medicine overall pregnancy success rate is 47 percent.
- The average pregnancy rate for in vitro fertilization at MeritCare is 39 percent; compared to a national average of 30 percent.
- Three in vitro fertilization cases were done in 1994; 110 were done in 2004. A total of 720 cases have been done since the center opened.
- In 2004, the center completed 650 artificial inseminations and 600 semen analysis tests.
