Making a Diagnosis
A couple may experience trouble conceiving due to health factors in the woman, man, or both. Factors include hormonal problems, physical disorders and a variety of factors related to sperm production.
The Fertility Evaluation
A series of tests can help determine what problems may exist and what treatment options may be most effective.
Four basic questions will be asked:
- Is there a sperm problem?
- Is there an ovulation problem?
- Can the egg and sperm unite?
- Can implantation occur and be maintained?
If a cause is not identified, more advanced testing may be required.
Female Exam
A general physical exam, breast exam and comprehensive pelvic exam may take place during your evaluation with your doctor. During these exams, the doctor will evaluate the size, shape and position of reproductive organs. A pelvic ultrasound or pap test may also take place.
Male Exam
A male exam may include a general physical and detailed examination of the reproductive organs. The doctor may look for varicose veins in the scrotal exam, which is present in about 40 percent of men who seek help for reproductive problems.
Unexplained Reproductive Problems
Nearly 15 percent of diagnostic tests for fertility are determined normal and a diagnosis of "unexplained infertility" is made. Treatment options are often most successful for couples with unexplained fertility problems.
