Hospitalist Program

Change text size + -

MeritCare offers a special in-house care program for patients. When in the hospital, you may not be able to see your primary care doctor, but our hospitalists are the link between you and your doctor. Hospitalists specialize in caring for hospitalized patients and provide ongoing and immediate care throughout your stay.

CARE

What is a hospitalist?

Hospitalists are board-certified internal medicine doctors who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients. MeritCare's hospitalists work with your primary care doctor and specialists to ensure that you receive high-quality health care. Read about each of the hospitalists at MeritCare.

Does the hospitalist work with my doctor?

Even though you may not see your primary care doctor during your hospital stay, your primary care doctor and hospitalist will discuss the plan for your care to help ensure a smooth transition when you go home.

What happens when I leave the hospital?

Your hospitalist will communicate with your primary care doctor to help ensure a smooth transition when you go home. If you have questions about your health, please call your primary care doctor. Find your doctor in the MeritCare Find a Doctor search.

Can a hospitalist benefit me?

Having a hospitalist is similar to having a primary care doctor with you in the hospital throughout your stay. Hospitalists at MeritCare are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, providing ongoing and immediate care. Your hospitalist is also available to answer any questions or concerns you or your family may have. In addition, hospitalists are familiar with every department and specialist at MeritCare. Learn about the different types of doctors.

Why is a team of doctors with the hospitalist?

MeritCare is proud to be a teaching hospital and proud to be associated with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Training doctors and other health care professionals have been a part of our tradition since 1946. The hospitalist program is one way MeritCare teaches residents and medical students.
