The Health Care Team

A hospital is staffed by many specialists, each who have a unique role in caring for patients or keeping the facilities clean and in good running order. Below are some of the medical and non-medical professionals that you might encounter during your stay at MeritCare.

Doctors

  • The doctor who admits you is responsible for directing your care while you are in the hospital. This doctor may not be your own doctor, but a hospitalist.
  • Hospitalists are doctors specializing in the care of hospitalized patients. They are available in the hospital 24 hours daily, and work with your primary care doctor and other specialists to ensure you receive the best care.
  • Resident doctors, under the supervision of a hospitalist, may also be involved in your care.

Nurses

Twenty-four hour nursing care is provided by a team of professional registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse assistants. Contact your nurse, at any time, if you have questions or concerns.

Physical Therapy

A physical therapist gathers information about pain, loss of movement and other problems. A physical therapist may also provide evaluation, testing and treatment.

Respiratory Care

Respiratory therapists are experts in caring for problems related to breathing and may provide evaluation, testing and therapy for your lungs.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapists evaluate and treat speech, hearing, language, swallowing and thinking problems.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists work to improve a patient's ability to complete everyday activities. Treatment may include exercise or activities to improve strength, endurance, coordination, sensation, range of motion, vision or thinking skills, as well as splints or positioning devices.

Nutrition

Dietitians meet with patients to discuss and evaluate specific nutritional needs, develop nutritional care plans, and provide appropriate meal plans during the hospital stay.

Pharmacy

Pharmacists review patient medication orders for appropriate doses, drug interactions and length of therapy. If you prefer, and are able, you may administer your own medication. Your nurse can assist you in arranging a self-medication program.

Spiritual Care

Chaplains are available 24 hours daily to offer and facilitate spiritual care to patients, families and staff, supporting the joys and sorrows of life experiences. Nurses can arrange a visit from a chaplain, who can also assist in notifying your faith community, clergy or parish nurse of your hospitalization. The MeritCare Chapel is available to all patients and is located near the south entrance of MeritCare Hospital.
