11.20.2008Hysterectomy is the second most frequently performed operation for women, second only to Cesarean section. Women in the region who need a hysterectomy have a new, less-invasive option at MeritCare known as laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH). The procedure causes less trauma to the body, making recovery much faster than with traditional surgery. Women who have LSH can be back to their normal activities in one to two weeks, compared to the six-week average recovery for a traditional hysterectomy.

11.17.2008For the ninth time in ten years, MeritCare has been named one of the nation's 100 top heart hospitals by Thomson Reuters. Each year, a study, called the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success compares success rates at high performing heart centers nationwide. The study evaluated nearly 1,000 U.S. hospitals by analyzing their outcomes for eight measures (mortality, complications, length of stay, cost, etc.) related to heart attack, heart failure, angioplasty and bypass surgery.

11.13.2008The community is gathering to kick-off the holiday season and raise money for an important cause. Friday, Nov. 21, starts the two-day MeritCare Foundation's Festival of Wreaths celebration. This 24rd annual, premier event will fill the Ramada Plaza Suites Crystal Ballroom in Fargo with the smells, sounds and ambiance of the holiday season. Events include shopping, a festival luncheon, breakfast and lunch events with Santa, a formal gala and more.

10.29.2008It's a sobering statistic - one of out of every five children in the U.S. is overweight. Childhood obesity is a significant public health risk for overweight children because it increases their risk for developing medical problems, depression and low self-esteem. These children also have a high probability of becoming overweight adults, which increases their chances of future medical complications.

10.21.2008On Thursday, Oct. 23, from 4-6:30 p.m., Kohl's Department Store is hosting a free car seat event for parents and caregivers to ensure their children are properly buckled up and ready for Halloween. In addition to education on proper car seat usage from certified car seat technicians, there will be games and prizes for the kids. Halloween costumes are encouraged. The program is designed for people who live with multiple sclerosis, and also for families and friends interested in learning about the disorder. 10.8.2008In an unprecedented move, MeritCare Health System has decided to no longer provide services to seniors that have their health insurance coverage via Unicare, a commercial payer that is part of Medicare's advantage program. This means that as of Jan. 1, 2009, patients that choose to continue to receive their health insurance coverage via Unicare will no longer be able to be seen at MeritCare.

10.3.2008New this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children age 6 months through 18 years old receive an annual influenza vaccination. This is the best protection against developing the flu, a serious disease that can be fatal. Flu-related deaths reported in the U.S. in children during the 2007-2008 season totaled 83.
