Diagnosing Dementia
Dementia diagnosis is more complex than simply identifying symptoms. A diagnosis usually involves various tests, reviews of a persons clinical history and an interview with a family member or significant other to help understand how the person functions in their home setting. MeritCares Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Program specializes in diagnosing and treating dementia using state-of-the-art technology (brain imaging such as CT, MRI and PET) as well as medical and neurological examinations. Additionally, neuropsychological tests may be performed to detect problems in memory, language and problem solving. Multiple appointments may be necessary to perform all parts of the evaluation. After the tests are completed, the doctor will meet with the patient and the patients family/significant other to review the results and discuss treatment options. After diagnosis, periodic follow-ups in MeritCares Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Program may be required. Ongoing general medical care continues to be coordinated with the patients primary care physician.
