Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)

CRRTContinuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a 24-hour continuous dialysis therapy provided to patients who are medically unstable due to injury, trauma, or require large amounts of fluid removal. CRRT is not as aggressive as hemodialysis treatments and it corrects imbalances and abnormalities within the body more easily. This therapy is provided in conjunction with the Dialysis team, Intensive Care nurses and physicians. CRRT is delivered via the Prisma dialysis machine. Blood is pumped from the body through a filter and cleansed with a dialysate solution, which is added to help correct imbalances in the body. This dialysate solution is made up of electrolytes such as potassium, calcium, and sodium.

CRRTPatients that are candidates for this type of treatment vary in their medical diagnosis. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy can only be done within an Intensive Care Unit. The following conditions warrant for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy over Hemodialysis.
