Frequently Asked Questions about LASIK Surgery

What is LASIK?

LASIK is one of the several surgical procedures used to correct what are called refractive errors. A laser is used to reshape the cornea to improve eyesight and reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eye wear.

How does the procedure work?

LASIK is a quick and relatively pain-free procedure. After applying a local anesthetic to the eye, the surgeon will use an excimer laser to remove microscopic layers of the cornea to correct its curvature and clear your vision. (You will remain awake the whole time.) A small flap of tissue is first removed and folded to the side. The computer-operated laser then applies a preprogrammed number of ultraviolet charges to remove layers of the exposed cornea. The flap is put back in place, and the procedure is complete. Regular follow-up visits allow your doctor to monitor the healing process.

Am I a good candidate?

For many people with nearsightedness and/or astigmatism, LASIK may prove quite effective. If you're considering LASIK, begin by asking yourself the following questions:
  • Is your vision stable?
  • Are you nearsighted (with or without astigmatism)?
  • Are you free of any other eye problems?

If you answered "yes" to ALL of these questions, talk to your eye care professional about LASIK. MeritCare offers free personalized consultations with a staff member to assist in answering your questions regarding LASIK and determining if you may be a good candidate. If you decide to further pursue this option we will schedule you for an exam with either one of our optometrists or ophthalmologists. He or she will perform a series of tests to determine whether or not your eyes are right for the procedure. These tests focus mainly on the shape and thickness of your cornea and how your eyes focus light. Appointments can be made by calling (701) 234-2305 or 800-437-4010, ext. 2305.

I would recommend the LASIK procedure to anyone that is tired of wearing glasses and has an active lifestyle.

What are the risks?

LASIK works effectively for most people with few or no complications, but like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications to consider when deciding whether or not to undergo a LASIK procedure.

  • In rare instances, vision is "over-corrected," leading to farsightedness, irregular astigmatism or variable vision.
  • Acute light sensitivity, cloudy vision and/or the appearance of halos around lights may occur. All of these are rare and should clear up as the eye heals.
  • The corneal flap (the flap of tissue cut away at the beginning of the procedure and replaced afterward) may get damaged or lost and need to be replaced or repositioned accordingly.
  • In rare instances, the cornea may become infected. The ensuing buildup of scar tissue could then lead to decreased vision.
  • A second LASIK treatment may be needed if your eye does not heal properly.
  • Even the most successful LASIK procedure does not guarantee perfect vision. You may still need to wear glasses or contacts, though your prescription should be significantly weaker.
  • Your eyesight may still worsen over time.

What kind of laser does MeritCare use?

MeritCare uses the VISX S-4 laser ActiveTrak eye tracking technology and variable laser beam shaping. The tracking technology is used specifically to follow the unique movements of your eye during the surgery and variable laser beam shaping customizes the procedure for your pupil size.
