Preventing accidental injury

Children's Safety is Our Business

Accidental injury remains the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States. It is estimated that 90 percent of accidental injuries can be prevented by following recommended guidelines such as wearing a helmet while participating in wheeled sport activities, supervising children in and around water, making sure young children do not cross the street alone, and making sure athletes of all ages drink enough water to prevent dehydration and ensuring children are properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system or seat belt while riding in a vehicle.

Safe Kids Fargo/Moorhead's mission is to reduce and prevent accidental injuries to children by creating and supporting child safe communities through educating families and children, providing safety devices, and advocating for public policy change.

Safe Kids Fargo/Moorhead, led by MeritCare Children's Hospital, provides leadership to the community, identifies and targets injury problems, plans and implements strategies to address problems, calls attention to problems through medica and public awareness activities, provides education programs for families and children, and distributes life-saving devices to families and children. Funding for Safe Kids is provided by Kohl's Department Store and the Kohl's Care for Kids program.

Safe Kids Fargo/Moorhead consists of health care providers, law enforcement, public health, and other private and public organizations committed to preventing accidental injuries in children ages birth to 14 years old. We are part of Safe Kids Worldwide, made up of more than 600 coalitions in 16 countries.
