To Our Readers

This has been a year of tremendous success for Sanford's Roger Maris Cancer Center. Not only did we continue our accreditation with the American College of Surgeons, but we also were given the prestigious honor of being one of the first 51 centers in the country to earn accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

Breast Cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women and follows behind lung cancer as the second most common killer. At Roger Maris Cancer Center, we saw 231 new cases of breast cancer in 2008, but we are continually working to lessen that number. Our patients have access to some of the very best medical services in the region. Our integrated approach to treating breast cancer means that collaboration between the oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and nurse case managers ensures comprehensive treatment planning.

This report highlights many of our excellent physicians and cancer staff and some of the work that is being done in our center. We couldn't do what we do without the support of our communities and family practice doctors. It is our hope that you will continue to refer your breast cancer patients to MeritCare. Across our entire region, our mission remains steadfast: To improve the health and quality of life of the people we serve.

Sincerely,

Roger Gilbertson, M.D.
