Type of Quality Data

Each year, Thomson Healthcare publishes benchmarks for health care performance through the "100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success" program. Its ratings are based on publicly-available statistics and other information. Goals include acknowledging high-performing management teams, establishing performance baselines, helping other hospitals improve performance and assisting all areas of health care. The hospitals are honored for their responsiveness to change, high quality and efficient care, and financial strength.

Data Source

Thomson Healthcare uses a national comparative balanced scorecard approach to identify the 100 top hospitals. Data is gathered from Thomson Healthcare's hospital database, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) information and Medicare cost reports. According to Thomson Healthcare, the data used in the top hospital studies represents more than 6,000 U.S. hospitals and more than 12 million patient discharges. The performance measures are evaluated and modified each year to ensure a balanced and comprehensive process.

In addition, each hospital is assigned to a peer group based on its size and teaching status:

  • Major Teaching Hospitals
  • Teaching Hospitals
  • Large Community Hospitals
  • Medium Community Hospitals
  • Small Community Hospitals
