MeritCare Rehabilitation Services Driving Program

An illness or injury can often result in a gradual or sudden decline in driving skills; everything from arthritis to stroke to amputation can affect a person's ability to drive. As a result, people are sometimes restricted from driving or may continue to drive, compromising their safety and the safety of others.

MeritCare Rehabilitation Services has created a Driving Program to help people learn or sharpen driving skills after illness or injury. It was recognized that this type of service was not available locally and that there is a strong need for this program in our community. MeritCare's specially trained and certified occupational therapists can evaluate driving ability, provide behind the wheel training, and help people get back in the driver's seat.

What Are the Services Provided?

  • Clinical evaluation of physical, mental and visual skills needed for driving.
  • Behind the wheel education and training in the classroom and on the road.
  • Determination of need for special equipment or different vehicle.
  • Education and training for use of special equipment recommended for vehicle.
  • Review of equipment after installation in personal vehicle.

Who is Appropriate for the Driving Program?

Previously licensed drivers with a variety of illnesses and injuries are eligible for the program. Medical conditions may include, but are not limited to: brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and neuromuscular diseases.

How is a Person Referred to the Driving Program?

Referrals may come from a physician, family member, lawyer, insurance group, vocational rehabilitation, or other community agency. However, a physician's order and a valid driver's license or special permit is required.

Will My Insurance Cover the Driving Program?

Generally, the clinical assessment will be covered by insurance policies; however, the patient will need to pay for the behind the wheel evaluation and/or training. Medicare does not cover the costs associated with the driving program.

Donations Make the Program Possible

The Driving Program and education for our therapists has been made possible by the generosity of the MeritCare Foundation.
