History

The school was initiated in 1953 as the St. Lukes School of Medical Technology and almost 600 students have since successfully completed this program of internship education.

Lab HistoryInitially students could begin the program any Monday of the year after supplying the program with several references, a picture and a letter stating the desire to begin training. There was little, if any didactic lecture but as one 1955 graduate stated, "I developed an attitude for medical ethics that I used throughout my career." Internship now involves a selective interview process, with all students beginning the first Monday in June. Days are spent not only in the clinical laboratory, but also in many hours of didactic lecture to instill a strong base of knowledge on which to build clinical and technological understanding and competency. MeritCare Health System, a large regional center, provides a broad base of patient care services and the laboratory training offers complete exposure to the variety of testing methodologies currently available.
