A Place to Pursue Your Passion

A job or a passion? If nursing is your passion, it matters where you pursue your nursing career. You want to be in a place that takes pride in what it does – because you take pride in what you do. A place where your expertise, skills and compassion are valued and appreciated because they contribute to a mission – a mission that fits with your personal goals. A place that helps you achieve your passion. That place is MeritCare.

Founded in the early 1900s as Fargo Clinic and St. Luke's Hospital, MeritCare Health System has evolved into the region's premier healthcare system. Today, we're a fully integrated clinic and hospital organization working together to serve people in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and southern Canada.

Major Service Areas

MeritCare offers the most comprehensive, advanced care of any medical center between Minneapolis and Seattle. While the entire organization represents quality, certain areas in particular stand out for their expertise and compassion for caring:

MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center is well-known across the region and draws thousands of patients every year. From children with leukemia to adults with rare cancers, the cancer team – including highly skilled oncology nurses – sees a wide range of cases. While many people receive standard oncology treatment, some participate in clinical trials. Thanks to our collaboration with well-respected national research organizations, we offer more than 100 clinical trials for various types of cancer, giving patients access to the latest cancer fighting treatment available. The Cancer Center includes on-site radiation therapy, infusion center, pharmacy, patient education and always, an approach that meets the needs of the whole person and their family.

MeritCare Children's, a 56-bed full-service Children's Hospital within MeritCare Hospital, features a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a mixed-age Pediatric Unit. It is one of only 170 hospitals in the nation to be recognized as a full member of NACHRI (National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions). Working side-by-side with neonatologists, pediatricians and a wide range of pediatric subspecialists, nurses put their pediatric nursing, psychosocial and child-development skills to use in cases of all kinds. Individualized, family-centered care is the model of care for all children's clinics for outpatient care. Nurses enjoy a professionally challenging work environment supported by the latest in technology, research and supportive care.

MeritCare Heart Center stands out in cardiovascular care. For several years, Solucient has named MeritCare one of the nation's Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals. MeritCare Heart Center features state-of-the-art treatments such as robotically-assisted heart surgery (this technology opens the door to minimally invasive heart surgery), bi-ventricular pacemakers and participation in research. In addition to the inpatient unit, we also offer a specialized cardiac rehab program and outpatient clinics for people with congestive heart failure, high cholesterol, heart-rhythm abnormalities and other conditions. From prevention to treatment to rehabilitation, the heart team offers a unique environment where caring and compassion truly team up with expert medical specialists.

MeritCare Neuroscience Center continues to lead the region in offering up-to-date neurological and neurosurgical care to adults and children. Like other surgeries, neurosurgery is moving toward a minimally invasive approach: MeritCare Neuroscience moves in that direction, too, with advanced technology and highly skilled specialists in place. In addition, the neuroscience team continues to build comprehensive programs around specific diagnoses such as MS, stroke, Parkinson's, headaches and other neuromuscular conditions. Appreciated by patients for its comprehensiveness and convenience, this approach draws staff who want to pursue special areas of expertise. The quality of MeritCare's inpatient rehabilitation services complements the expertise of neuroscience – ensuring the highest level of care in helping people regain self-sufficiency.

MeritCare Emergency Center and Critical Care serves a wide range of trauma patients, many who arrive here via MeritCare LifeFlight, our air-ambulance. Specially trained crews, including flight nurses, transport trauma victims from throughout the region. MeritCare's Emergency Center sees about 43,000 patients per year and is verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The critical care unit, including highly trained nurses, is prepared to care for the most critically ill and injured when they arrive. With trauma teams in place, operating rooms staffed 24-hours a day, critical care specialists available and highly skilled nurses supporting all these efforts, patients in life-threatening situations receive the best possible chance for recovery.

MeritCare Orthopaedics provides comprehensive care of the bones, muscles and joints. The Orthopaedics team offers a wide range of surgical expertise and excellent post-surgical inpatient and outpatient care. Advanced therapy and treatments include sports medicine and hand surgery experts. Inpatient rehabilitation services complete a full continuum of care. So whether patients are trying to maintain their physical independence or they are a competitive athlete, we have the cutting edge medical care to keep them in the game.
