It's summer and I'm bored. What can I do?
There are tons of fun things to do outdoors. It's easy to get some exercise outside and prevent injuries at the same time!
In the winter, families spend more time inside because of the weather. When it's nice, it's great to get outside and get some exercise! Here are some suggestions for outdoor fun.
Hit the road. All you really need for a workout are comfortable athletic shoes. Then head to the track or check out local trails for jogging - or biking and in-line skating. If your neighborhood or nearby college has jogging or fitness trails, you can probably pick up a map in your local convention and visitors bureau. (Women should avoid running alone in isolated areas or at night, even in places that feel safe, so take a friend on your road trip.)
Head to the court - or the green. Neighborhoods or nearby schools and universities may have tennis, racquetball, or squash facilities, and even golf courses. Many offer classes and lessons. And one of the great things about getting outdoors is that if your friends don't share your interests, you can usually meet other players easily at these types of sports fields.
Join the club. Even if you're not at the level of NCAA competition, there are opportunities to play team sports. Check out club sports like softball, kitten ball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, and tons of others.
Visit the pool. When it's hot outside, it's nice to get out and take a dip! Swimming will help you cool off, and it's an inexpensive way to entertain yourself and your friends.
Take a hike. Many neighborhoods have outdoor recreation clubs that loan or rent equipment - everything from tents and backpacks to kayaks and bikes for solo or group outings. They may also offer organized trips and lessons. If you're experienced in the outdoors, consider volunteering to lead groups of other students on hikes or other outdoor trips.
Get packing for a camp out. Even if you don't have a campground or national park nearby, you can camp in your very own back yard. Get out your flashlight, sleeping bag and bug spray and get ready to pitch your tent. You can show your friends how to really "rough it" by grilling out and making s'mores. Camping is a great way to spend time visiting with friends and you'll have the opportunity to apply all that you've learned in your astrology class by looking up at the stars.
