Guardian Angels Spotted at MeritCare
Angels have been seen in Surgery, Guest Services, the Family Birth Center… in fact, all over MeritCare. To spot them, look for the angel lapel pin.
The Guardian Angel Program honors MeritCare doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers who go above and beyond the ordinary and make a true difference in patient care. It's easy to express your gratitude for your Guardian Angel. It starts by sharing your story and making a donation to MeritCare Foundation. You can thank any person in any department and make a donation at any level.
Esther Baker, an RN in the Palliative Care Unit and MeritCare employee for more than 30 years, was recognized as a Guardian Angel in February 2008. She was one of four team members from her unit recognized by the same family. "To me that in and of itself speaks to how well we work together and that we are doing the right thing," Esther says.
When the patient entered palliative care, he was uncertain of his plan of care, but it became evident to him, his family, and the staff that it was end of life care. "We then did what we always do—focus on comfort, patient and family support, and symptom management," Esther says. "We promise that."
When she was recognized as a Guardian Angel, Esther was "genuinely please and surprised." "Even though it is an individual award," Esther says, "Everyone here has similar values, characteristics, and genuine kindness." She adds, "I am privileged to care for these patients and work with this team and organization."
Guardian Angel recipients receive a beautiful angel lapel pin, a letter acknowledging your gift, and recognition on the MeritCare Foundation's website and publications. More importantly, the program allows you to say thanks, offers your angel a moment to soar, and supports the excellent care and service at MeritCare.
Over 40 angels have been spotted so far, including exercise specialist Brett Beil, Dr. Mary Jo Crissler-Belanger, nurse Sara Bergeron, environmental service worker Craig Beyer, Dr. Robert Campbell, physician assistant Marc Goodboy, and receptionist Kristi Keeley.
To thank your care-givers, look for Guardian Angel envelopes at MeritCare locations, call the MeritCare Foundation (701) 234-6246, or give online at foundation.meritcare.com.
