da Vinci ® Hysterectomy

If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy, you may be a candidate for da Vinci ® Hysterectomy, one of the most effective, least invasive treatment options for a range of uterine conditions. Today, one in three women in the U.S. will have a hysterectomy before they turn 60. While no woman wants to face surgery, the vast majority of gynecologic conditions — from endometriosis to uterine fibroids, heavy menstrual bleeding to cancer — can now be treated effectively without a big incision. More and more women are choosing da Vinci ® Surgery for their hysterectomy. With da Vinci ® Surgery System, a hysterectomy requires only a few small incisions, so you can get back to life faster — within days rather than the usual weeks required with traditional surgery.

Traditional Open Surgery Versus Robot Assisted Surgery

Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet, open surgery can cause significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves.

For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci ® Surgery may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci ® System can operate with greater precision and control which benefits the patient and speeds recovery.

Benefits to the Patient

For most women the da Vinci ® treatment option offers numerous potential benefits over traditional open surgery, including:

  • Significantly less pain.
  • Minimal blood loss and need for transfusion.
  • Fewer complications.
  • Shorter hospital stay.
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities.
  • Small incisions for minimal scarring.
  • In most cases, better outcomes and patient satisfaction.

As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is both patient — and procedure-specific. While radical hysterectomy or abdominal hysterectomy performed using the da Vinci ® Surgery are considered safe and effective, these procedures may not be appropriate for every individual. Talk with your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.
